A Question of Loyalties

  • The American Revolution is important for Canadian history because of the mass migration it caused. Nearly 50,000 Loyalists immigrated to Canada to flee the war, which advanced the colonization and development of Canada.

  • The Loyalists changed how Canada looked after the American Revolution by standing strong for their country and not giving in to the Americans. The Loyalists stood strong in what they believed in.

  • Indigenous peoples had significant roles in the American Revolution. Brandt stood for his tribe as the Americans were taking over their land in New York, and came to the British to form a treaty that the British would fight with Brandt and his people. In eastern Canada, one of the tribes fought for their right to have their own government and land, but unfortunately fell at the hands of the Americans. The Loyalist’s migration impacted Indigenous peoples because there was a lot of people in need of land, which pushed a lot of Indigenous peoples away from the land that had belonged to them. This also cause Indigenous peoples to be forced into being under control of the British Empire.

  • Fleeing the US was different for the Black Loyalist’s because they were fleeing from slavery, however, they were still treated very poorly and many of them had left for Africa. Eventually, those who had stayed, eventually were able to buy their own land and build a life for themselves.
